Staff Writer Calvin Watkins analyzes a key matchup for the Cowboys in Week 15
Why him?
Crumpler is a big, physical tight end who has good hands and lines up in different spots. He has 42 catches for 618 yards and seven touchdowns. Crumpler, a three-time Pro Bowler, is quarterback Michael Vick's favorite target. Crumpler is big enough (6-2, 262) to knock down linebackers and defensive backs when he catches the ball. He's a matchup problem at all times because defensive coaches are not sure who to put on him.
How he does it
When Crumpler lines up in the slot, defenses have to make a tough decision: Should a linebacker, a safety or even a cornerback defend him? Crumpler uses his body well to shield defenders when catching the ball. He also lines up wide but runs his routes inside most of the time – giving Michael Vick an option in the middle of the field. Inside the 20, Crumpler is quick off the ball and can elude defenders to find open spots.
How to stop him
Crumpler isn't a good route runner, so a linebacker can push him away from his desired destination. When that happens, his numbers go down. Over the last two games, he has five catches. And he has only two touchdown receptions in his last six games. If teams make the Falcons one-dimensional, taking away the passing game, Crumpler has to block quick defensive ends or outside linebackers.
