Notebook: Offense may make it easy

Game plan could be simplified after Romo's poor outing

01:07 AM CST on Tuesday, December 12, 2006

By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – After a disappointing performance in which he completed only 16 of 33 passes for 249 yards with two interceptions and one touchdown, the offense could get a little simpler for Tony Romo.

The Cowboys quarterback had a 58.8 quarterback rating, his second worst of the season, in the loss to New Orleans on Sunday.

Romo was under pressure for most of the evening, but he also underthrew and overthrew receivers.

On Monday, coach Bill Parcells said some of Romo's throws were not his fault because several receivers ran bad routes. Terrell Owens said he made mental mistakes on some of his routes.

"I just think [New Orleans] did a good job of getting pressure on us," Romo said Sunday night. "When you're moving around, you don't want to put a ball in a position where the defense will intercept it. A couple of times, you just try to throw the ball before everything needs to be time-wise."

But Romo may have been asked to do too much, and that could force the simplification of the offense.

"Yeah, or cutting down some of the options on some of the things we're doing," Parcells said. "That would be under the category of simplifying."

■ Parcells responds to Owens: Terrell Owens said in an ESPN interview that when he suffered an accidental overdose earlier this season, Bill Parcells didn't contact him.

"I found it very odd that he wouldn't be concerned about not even just a player on the Cowboys, just me as a person," Owens said to former Cowboy Michael Irvin, who conducted the interview. "But hey, I've thought about it, but I didn't really dwell on it. I just let it go."

Parcells said he didn't hear Owens' interview.

"That's old news here. I don't know why we're revisiting that," Parcells said.

Owens also said that, because of all the controversy surrounding his tenure with the Cowboys, when "I'm on the field sometimes, I'm not really into it. It's almost like I'm kind of faking it."

■ Gramatica misses again: Though Martin Gramatica missed wide right on a 43-yard field goal attempt at the end of the first half, Parcells said he isn't losing confidence in his kicker.

"He hit the ball solid," Parcells said of the miss. "It was a good kick. It was just a little bit to the right, I guess."

■ Briefly: The Cowboys re-signed rookie running back Skyler Green on Monday and cut guard Travis Leffew. Green was waived Friday to make room for safety Tony Parrish. ... Wide receiver Damarious Bilbo was re-signed to the practice squad. Bilbo, who also played quarterback at Georgia Tech, could simulate Michael Vick in practice this week. Tight end Jason Randall was cut to make room for Bilbo. ... Parcells said he didn't think about playing backup quarterback Drew Bledsoe in the fourth quarter. ... Fullback Oliver Hoyte (knee) was injured in the first half but is fine and is expected to practice this week.
