Notebook: Meadowlands wins special for Parcells

03:24 AM CST on Monday, December 4, 2006

From Staff Reports

Bill Parcells isn't sure how many more trips he will make to Giants Stadium as a coach, but he has had two memorable wins at the Meadowlands as Cowboys coach.

In 2003, it was a last-second drive to tie the score and Billy Cundiff's NFL record-tying seventh field goal of the game to win, 35-32, in overtime. And on Sunday, Martin Gramatica connected from 46 yards for the win.

"This is a very important place in Bill Parcells' life, this stadium here," Parcells said. "Most of the great memories that I have are really centered in this place, a lot of them anyway. The Cowboys are adding to them. A game like that with so much on the line for us makes me really happy for our guys."

The Cowboys were flagged for seven penalties for 58 yards, while the Giants countered with nine for 94 yards. In the teams' Oct. 23 meeting at Texas Stadium, the Cowboys were penalized just once, while New York had three.

"We talked this week about being smart, about going into this game thinking about the circumstances and the situation," New York coach Tom Coughlin said. "And we needed to have poise, control our emotions, but those penalties obviously were not what was needed at the time."

Drops adding up for Owens

Terrell Owens' two dropped passes Sunday upped his team-leading total to 12.

He committed his first one with 10:50 to play in the first quarter. The second was on a third-and-7 which forced Dallas to kick a field goal late in the third quarter.

Owens had eight catches for 84 yards with no touchdowns. For the season, he has 69 catches for 915 yards, both team highs.

Romo is average, or is he?

Following the game, Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey wasn't in a complimentary mood.

While reporters were asking about Tony Romo, Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce said, "give all the credit to Romo."

Shockey, who was getting dressed next to Pierce, heard the comments and said, "very average player."

When a reporter asked Shockey if he was talking about Romo he quickly said, "no, I was talking about myself."

Challenges work for Cowboys

A Tony Romo swing pass to Julius Jones was ruled a lateral and cost Dallas four yards early in the second half. But Bill Parcells challenged the ruling, and it was overturned.

The Cowboys have challenged six plays this season and four were reversed in their favor. Five of the six challenges by Dallas involved pass plays.

No INTs but secondary plays well

The Cowboys secondary didn't have any interceptions for the first time in three games, though Aaron Glenn almost had an interception in the end zone when he broke up a pass.

But Dallas' secondary did make several key plays including Anthony Henry knocking a potential touchdown pass away from Jeremy Shockey in the end zone.

Plaxico Burress had six catches for 43 yards with one touchdown. In the teams' first meeting, Burress had two catches, but they were for 94 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown pass.

Jones says win is vindication

Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones took a historical look at Sunday's victory.

"This win has a chance to be as important as Emmitt's great game in 1993 when he hurt his shoulder," Jones said of the Cowboys' 16-13 overtime win at the Meadowlands. "That one wrapped up the NFC East, but this one substantiates all the things we've done over the past four or five weeks."

Briefly ...

Backup offensive tackle Jason Fabini lined up as a fullback. In the last few games he has lined up as a tight end and gone in motion a handful of times. ... Receiver Skyler Green, cornerback Nate Jones, nose tackle Montavious Stanley, guard Joe Berger, guard Travis Leffew, guard Cory Procter, tackle Pat McQuistan and defensive end Stephen Bowen were inactive.

Giants punter Jeff Feagles became the fifth player in NFL history to play in 300 games, but a knee injury nearly kept him out and forced the team to sign Sean Landeta on Saturday. ... Fullback Oliver Hoyte had the second catch (6 yards) of his career.

Gerald Ford, SMU's top booster, attended the game as a guest of Cowboys owner/general manger Jerry Jones. Ford was introduced to several players in the locker room after the game. ... Receiver Terrell Owens said he's excited about his birthday party today in Hollywood. Last year, he held it in Atlantic City.
