Notebook: Receivers come through with Glenn on sideline

03:26 AM CST on Monday, November 13, 2006

From Staff Reports

With Terry Glenn remaining in Dallas because of a knee injury, the Cowboys figured the passing game might struggle.

It didn't.

Sam Hurd replaced Glenn in the starting lineup, catching four passes for 42 yards, and Patrick Crayton had the first 100-yard game of his career, catching five passes for 104 yards and a touchdown. Terrell Owens had his longest catch as a Cowboy, a 51-yard touchdown, and finished with 96 yards on five catches.

Glenn attempted to practice Friday but felt soreness when he cut. It was the first game he missed since a foot injury knocked him out of the final 10 games in 2004.

"You can't really express how good he is," quarterback Tony Romo said. "He really can do some things that a lot of guys can't."

Cowboys check out Cardinals' new digs

The Cowboys had nearly 20 people tour University of Phoenix Stadium on Saturday to take in the sights of the Cardinals' new stadium, but owner and general manager Jerry Jones was not among them because he was sick.

Jones, however, made five trips to Glendale, Ariz., while the stadium was being constructed to gain some ideas for the Cowboys' stadium in Arlington, which is set to open in 2009.

"It's pretty cool," end Marcus Spears said. "It's a nice facility. It's brand new. If it was brand new and I didn't like it, something would be wrong with it."

Vanderjagt mum about playing former team

It's Indianapolis week, but Mike Vanderjagt is not biting.

Vanderjagt spent the first eight years of his career with next week's opponent, the Colts, and became the NFL's most accurate kicker in history. He had some tumultuous times in Indy and never felt wanted by president Bill Polian.

"You're not going to get a lot out of me," Vanderjagt said. "It doesn't matter to me. It's no different than any other game. We just want to win."

Penalties remain a problem, even in win

The Cowboys' struggles with penalties continued Sunday. They were penalized eight times for 69 yards, bringing the season total to 68 and their yardage total to 679.

An offensive pass interference penalty on Crayton negated what would have been the first touchdown of Sam Hurd's career. It was the fifth offensive pass interference penalty against the Cowboys this season. The Cowboys were also flagged for a chop block for the third straight game.

Watkins has first pick as secondary improves

The Cowboys' secondary has been criticized outside and inside the locker room. On Sunday, an efficient secondary didn't allow a touchdown pass.

Over the last three weeks, the Cowboys faced offenses with threats at wide receiver. On Sunday, Arizona had Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. Next week features Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne of Indianapolis.

"It's great for us as a team, especially this little stretch with two passing offenses back-to-back," cornerback Terence Newman said. "At the same time, it can give us some confidence if we can slow those guys down."

Rookie safety Patrick Watkinsrecorded his first career interception. The pass was tipped by Anthony Henry, and it fell into Watkins' hands.

"I give Henry the credit on that one," Watkins said. "I just was in the right place."

Jones disappointed about Coleman situation

Owner Jerry Jones said he was disappointed safety Marcus Coleman was cut after his DWI arrest .

Coleman missed the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. When he was eligible to return, he was cut and then re-signed to help a struggling Patrick Watkins at free safety.

"We had him here because he gave us some veteran experience in a sensitive place where we've let some big plays occur," Jones said. "It's purely about the team and benefiting the team. I'm not going to get into his issue because I don't know the details of what happened on Friday."

Running back Keylon Kincade said he was excited when he got the call to travel to Arizona and was even more pumped to carry the ball in his first NFL game.

Kincade, an SMU graduate from Troup, Texas, rushed four times for nine yards, most of which occurred late in the fourth quarter.

"It was a big ol' release," Kincade said. "I knew I was going to play, I just didn't know when."
