Calvin Watkins' five plays that shaped the game
02:05 AM CST on Monday, October 30, 2006
1 | Cowboys miss on fumble The situation: Dallas kicks off with 12:16 left in first half. The play: Carolina's Richard Marshall returns kickoff and fumbles on a hit by Oliver Hoyte. Three Cowboys, Hoyte, Jacques Reeves and Abram Elam, all fail to scoop up the ball around the 10-yard line. The loose ball is recovered by Marshall at the Carolina 11. |
2 | Chop block forces 2nd-and-long The situation: Second-and-3 at Dallas 32 The play: Tony Romo's 9-yard pass to Anthony Fasano is negated by a chop block. Julius Jones blocked low, and Andre Gurode went high on a Carolina defender. Instead of a first down, the Cowboys had a second-and-18 at the Dallas 17 with 13:01 to play in the first quarter on the first possession. |
3 | Drop could have been TD The situation: Third-and-7 at Dallas 37 The play: Jake Delhomme finds Keyshawn Johnson for a potential touchdown pass. Johnson beats Anthony Henry on an inside move and has some space. The pass hits Johnson in the hands and chest. If Johnson catches the pass, it's a race to the end zone. Carolina to punt with 6:24 left in the third quarter. |
4 | Lead bounces Cowboys' way The situation: Dallas kicks off to Carolina. The play: Brad Hoover fields a kickoff that bounces. Hoover is stripped by Sam Hurd, who recovers the ball with 9:47 to play in the fourth quarter. The play is reviewed, and the call is upheld, though it appeared Hoover's knee was down as the ball was stripped. Julius Jones then runs for a touchdown and a 21-14 lead. |
5 | Williams pick seals it The situation: Second-and-6 at Carolina 6 The play: Jake Delhomme throws a pass to Keyshawn Johnson, but Roy Williams picks off the pass with 4:40 left in the fourth quarter. Dallas took advantage, scoring on a Marion Barber run to take a 28-14 lead. |
