Saturday's Oxnard Report

11:10 PM CDT on Saturday, August 20, 2005

From Staff Reports

Linebacker Kevin Burnett

Saturday was not the most demanding practice of training camp, with a lot of drills run at less than 100 percent, but the rookie linebacker made his presence felt in a goal-line drill. First, Burnett deflected a Tony Romo pass; on the next play, he blitzed Romo and would have had a sack if it were a game. Coach Bill Parcells will use Burnett a lot this season, but he is trying to simplify the role so as to not overload the player.

• Former Disney president Michael Ovitz visited practice Saturday. Ovitz has attempted to bring a new team to Los Angeles.

• The Cowboys did not wear pads for the third straight practice. They will have a short walkthrough today before flying to Seattle for Monday's game.

• More equipment trucks went back to Dallas.

QB Drew Bledsoe

Drew Bledsoe threw consecutive touchdown passes in red-zone drills to tight end Jason Witten, who ran past linebacker Reggie Love, and wide receiver Terry Glenn, who beat cornerback Anthony Henry. Bledsoe added another touchdown throw, to Keyshawn Johnson, later in the drill.

DT Leonardo Carson

Leonardo Carson dropped what would have been a touchdown pass from Drew Henson during goal-line drills. The defensive tackle has worked at fullback in short-yardage situations; a lot of teams use defenders in that situation, in varying degrees. Henson kidded Carson after practice.

I know you're not a doctor, but who is in the right about Jacob Rogers' surgery? I remember when Al Johnson had microfracture surgery on his knee, the Cowboys talked about how delicate and serious a surgery it was and how it might not even work. They feared for his career. Now they're acting as if it's some sort of elective cosmetic surgery.

– Mark England

I don't know who is right or wrong when it comes to whether Rogers needs surgery. Only he can answer that. The only thing I do know is that in 11 years on the beat, I don't ever remember owner Jerry Jones being so openly critical about a player's decision to have surgery. Then there's coach Bill Parcells, who says he has no idea what the injury is or how it's going to be repaired. I think they're disappointed with Rogers' mental and physical toughness, based on their public comments the past few days.

8-8: "The defense is good, young and talented, but it's going to take some time for it to come together."
