INDIANAPOLIS – The Cowboys will speak with former San Diego Chargers defensive backs coach Brian Stewart about joining the staff now that he has been released from his contract.
The Cowboys had been turned down in prior attempts to bring Stewart to town, but when the Chargers hired Bill Bradley to help coach the secondary, that cracked the door open for Stewart to possibly rejoin coach Wade Phillips.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said "nothing is finalized."
The Cowboys have not spoken to Stewart, who was flying from San Diego to Indianapolis on Saturday, but bad weather delayed his arrival.
Stewart could join the Cowboys as defensive coordinator, however, Todd Bowles, who has been on the Cowboys' staff since 2005, is also under consideration for that job.
Phillips will primarily call the plays for his 3-4 defense. Stewart could be the final addition to Phillips' staff.
New perspective for Nguyen: Eight years ago, Dat Nguyen attended the scouting combine as a prospect hoping to show he could play in the NFL.
Now, Nguyen is back at the scouting combine as a coach with the Cowboys.
Nguyen said he became interested in coaching last season because he missed the game.
"It wasn't weird at first because I couldn't do it anymore," Nguyen said of retiring because of neck and knee injuries. "My best wasn't good enough. I couldn't play. As it went on, I started to think I could help a little bit with my experience and how I played."
Nguyen will assist the inside linebackers and serve as defensive quality control coach. He also has the strange task of coaching his former teammates.
"There's a respect there," Nguyen said. "I know the guys. They know me. I just want them to know I plan on helping them."
Owens update: Phillips said he spoke with Drew Rosenhaus, who represents wide receiver Terrell Owens, and isn't sure when Owens will return after he undergoes a second surgery on his right ring finger Thursday.
"I will have to talk to our doctors and his doctors on how long he is going to be out and when he will be coming back," Phillips said. "Drew Rosenhaus said he will be back sooner than [training camp], so we will have to see what the doctors say."
