Cowboys hire Wilson to coach QBs

The Cowboys added another veteran coach for their offense with the hiring of Wade Wilson as quarterbacks coach.

Wilson played quarterback for the Cowboys from 1995 to '97, then was the position coach from 2000 to '02.

Wilson was Chicago's quarterbacks coach the last three seasons.

With Wilson's experience as a coach and player, he can provide help to Jason Garrett, who begins his first year as the Cowboys' offensive coordinator, and quarterback Tony Romo. Romo, who won four of his first five starts after replacing Drew Bledsoe, struggled over the last month of the season that ended with a wild-card playoff loss to Seattle.

The Cowboys are determined to improve Romo's play and make him the team's quarterback of the future.

Garrett, despite more than 10 years as a backup quarterback, has only been an assistant coach for two seasons. Garrett was the quarterbacks coach for Miami the last two years.

But Garrett is highly thought of among NFL coaches as a bright offensive mind.

"This is a hire that will directly facilitate the development of Tony Romo," owner/general manager Jerry Jones said in a statement. "We think that this is the best scenario possible for Tony, as Wade [Wilson] and Jason [Garrett] have a combined 30 years of experience in playing the position of quarterback in the National Football League."

Last week, the team hired veteran coaches Ray Sherman (wide receivers) and Skip Peete (running backs).

The team also announced the hiring of Bruce Read as the special teams coach.

Read was the special teams coordinator at Oregon State the last three seasons.

In 2006, the Oregon State special team unit had one of its best seasons. Sammie Stroughter set a school record with three punt returns for touchdowns and Alexis Serena set a school record with 106 consecutive made extra-point attempts.

Read has big shoes to fill with the departure of previous special teams coach Bruce DeHaven.

Last season, punter Mat McBriar led the NFC in gross punting average and earned a Pro Bowl selection.

Terence Newman finished fifth in the conference in punt returns and the Cowboys had two players, Tyson Thompson and Miles Austin, finish in the top five in kickoff returns.

Read was San Diego's special teams coach from 1999 to 2001. In 2001, San Diego led the NFL in kickoff return average.

Dallas now has to fill only one coaching position – defensive coordinator. The team is interested in giving the position to secondary coach Todd Bowles.

Jones and coach Wade Phillips said they are impressed with Bowles.

However, Phillips would like to hire San Diego Chargers secondary coach Brian Stewart for the position, according to sources. Phillips was denied an opportunity to interview Stewart two weeks ago. With the recent coaching change in San Diego, Dallas will make another attempt at the scouting combine this week in Indianapolis to see if Stewart is available.
