Clint Ellison of Plano: I plan to watch John McCain's acceptance speech. I hope to hear him differentiate himself from his Democratic opponent by outlining his core beliefs: love of country, faith in God, the sanctity of human life, supremacy of the free enterprise system and the concept that less government is best. Bill Baumbach of Wylie: Since I didn't watch Barack Obama's speech, I'm sure not going to watch John McCain. I already know whom I'm voting for – there's no need to subject my television to the risk of damage from objects hurled in frustration over my hearing more inane political platitudes. Susan Distefano, Garland: I absolutely will watch. I am hoping to hear something – anything – to give me a reason to vote. I definitely know why I wouldn't vote for the other candidate, but I really want to hear something that will convince me that I am right in thinking I should vote for John McCain. Right now, in my mind, he's merely the lesser of all evils that we're given to choose from. How sad to not be excited at the thought of a change. Judi Bartik Wohead of Allen: Of course, I am going to watch his speech. I teach speech communication at Collin College, and this is one of the few opportunities we get to see a televised speech in its entirety. I tell my students it is their duty to be informed as educated citizens. I'm not sure what I hope to hear, but I'm sure it will be different from what we heard last week. And that is the whole point of the democratic process. We the people get to decide whom to believe. Stephen Boone of Garland: Yes, I plan to watch. I would hope, but don't expect, to hear some recognition of the great things George W. Bush has accomplished in the last eight years, despite never having a meaningful majority in Congress. Marie Blackwell of Garland: Yes, I plan to watch it and hope to hear how they plan to accommodate the old and the poor in our own country, those of us who seem forgotten – the old, the ones on Social Security, Medicare, the homeless and the needy. I expect to hear of willingness to work together for the good of the country, not just for the good of the wealthy and big businesses. This election is going to come down to much more than what is said. Sen. John McCain is a true hero, but his speech must give me a basis for that confidence. Teri Brown Teacher, Austin Elementary, Mesquite I am not planning to watch John McCain. I believe I have heard enough of his platform to make an informed decision on Election Day. Besides, it's my bowling night! Carol Cruz Teacher, Dobbs Elementary, Rockwall Yes, I will. In his speech, I would like to hear him discuss issues concerning ending the war, our staggering economy, improvements in our education system and gas prices. Cari Montgomery Teacher, Wilmeth Elementary, McKinney Absolutely, yes. I want to hear if John McCain will be able to tell America's children when their moms, dads, brothers or sisters will return home safely to their families' dinner tables.SOUNDING OFF
