Busing then and now

Re: "Spruce High changes will take place – Court rejects parents' last-ditch effort to block busing temporarily," Friday Metro.

To read that DISD is going to bus students from H. Grady Spruce High School to Lincoln and Madison high schools has got to bring a chuckle to all who attended Spruce from 1972 forward. I laughed until I cried when I read the lawsuit filed by the students' parents that stated, "Students would lose their sense of community and identity when bused away from their neighborhoods."

In 1972, despite all protests and lawsuits, a desegregation order signed by Judge Barefoot Sanders implemented busing students to Spruce from Lincoln and Madison. It didn't work. Now Spruce is considered a high-minority enrollment campus and an academically unacceptable school.

If I were the parent of a child at Lincoln or Madison high school, I would be filing lawsuits, fighting again to stop the busing.
