Re: "Animal control gave her dog away, woman says," Friday news story. It's easy to hate dog catchers. We grew up on stories of evil men taking delight in catching loveable meatball-eating pooches. In reality, animal control officers don't enjoy carting pets off to the pound. Animal control employees are simply big-hearted men and women working hard to keep our communities and pets safe. Garland Animal Services has recently been under scrutiny. Quite often, the complainers are owners deferring the blame of their own pet negligence, but a negative story catches the public's attention. I, for one, would love to see a story about the Garland animal control officer who migrated from Nigeria to raise five honor students on a city worker's salary. Or I'd like to hear a story about the animal shelter employee who spends her off hours commuting to and from San Antonio to rehab injured birds of prey. How about a story about a vet tech who has visited countless numbers of schools and nursing homes just to spread her love and knowledge of animals? Where are the positive stories about the hard-working employees of the Garland Animal Services? Our thanks and appreciation to all local animal control employees is overdue.
