Ties to GOP are tenuous, at best

Re: "Return to GOP roots" by Robert Richter, Tuesday Letters.

Mr. Richter's argument regarding black people having an inferiority complex is rife with stereotyping. Does Mr. Richter forget that Strom Thurmond, a devout segregationist, was once a Southern Democrat? Thanks to Texans like President Lyndon Johnson, the Democrats embraced the teaching of Martin Luther King Jr. and fought segregation.

In the meantime, Mr. Thurmond and the other good old boys fled for the Republican Party. Fortunately, black people have a lot more self-confidence than Mr. Richter gives them credit for, and Barack Obama is the most self-confident politician I've seen, regardless of party affiliation.
