Editorial: Legislature can't avoid school funding
Texas' struggle to fund its schools is like the cousin who keeps showing up for the family reunions with the same old tales told every two years or so. Except legislators can't avoid this by saying, "Oops, gotta run, pal."
Editorial: Waiting for Cowboys' big one
If the biggest mistake in sports is to dwell on the past, the second biggest is to pretend it never happened. This should remind you that your Dallas Cowboys begin another long march today in Cleveland. Is one playoff victory so much to ask?

Editorial: McCain, Palin make it a race
In the most important speech of his career, John McCain returned to his favorite themes, the ones most true to himself: honor, duty and sacrifice for a cause greater than oneself. He always has thought himself more statesman than partisan, and that was the man he showed us last night.

When John McCain takes the stage tonight, he must trust the reformist, maverick instincts that got him to this point and, importantly, inspire Americans – starting with the party faithful. His task is framing his story not just as an alternative but as the superior direction.

Editorial: Palin takes the big stage
If Sarah Palin delivers an eye-popping speech to delegates – and, more importantly, to swing-state voters – she quiets the scuttlebutt. If she falls short, she risks creating an avalanche of doubt about her candidacy, not to mention John McCain's judgment.
Editorial: This time, New Orleans drew an inside straight
Better preparation helped the Crescent City survive Hurricane Gustav, which failed to meet advance billing as the "mother of all storms." Now, back to work on those levees. Good fortune may not be enough for the next storm.
Editorial: We recommend Ames for tax assessor-collector
David Childs, a 20-year incumbent, couldn't tell us his office's collection rate or provide a satisfactory answer about the computer glitch debacle, when thousands of taxpayers were overcharged but not informed for two years. That's why we recommend voters pick Democratic challenger John Ames.

Editorial: We recommend Adams, Lewis, Creuzot in Criminal District Court
Democrat Don Adams has been an effective and fair judge in this court; even his Republican opponent agrees. ... Gracie Lewis earns our nod based on 13 years of juvenile bench experience and passion for the law ... John Creuzot has earned a national reputation as an innovator who brings an approach that is both fair and creative to the courtroom.
Editorial: Republicans lag among Latinos
John McCain can hardly afford a huge drop-off among Latino voters. That this dramatic decline appears wrapped up in the immigration debate makes it an ironic, unfair blow.

Editorial: The Republicans' challenges
John McCain has several things working against him, and Republicans need to tackle them this week in St. Paul, Minn. Part of the problem is his inability to present a compelling narrative about where he wants to take America and how his life story uniquely qualifies him to lead the nation.
